This how it all started

How I Became a Caregiver at a Very Young Age

My life as a caregiver began at the age of 7. That’s how old I was when my mother gave birth to my youngest sibling, Nancy. Our sibling group of seven kids was seen as three subgroups: Judy was the second oldest of the two “big girls” followed by the two “boys” and then the three “little girls” Jean, Ellen, and Nancy.

We “big girls” were each given an assignment of younger siblings to be “in charge of” whenever our parents were busy with other things.  Maura’s caregiving assignment was to focus on the oldest of our two brothers and the oldest of our three younger sisters. My assignment was to focus on the younger of the two boys as well as the middle of our three youngest sisters. We were all “in charge” of the seventh child, our youngest sister Nancy who had Down Syndrome

We chose healthcare careers

Flash forward and see that Maura went on to a distinguished career in Nursing and Administration while I chose a career as a Geriatric clinician and a Driver Safety specialist. We devoted ourselves to our education, families, and caregiving careers, each for over 40 years. As a lifelong learner, I am especially interested in caregiver training, wellness, cognition, driving, home safety, fall prevention, and aging in place.

Family Matters

Family dynamics shifted as Nancy’s adult behavior began to change when she was around the age of 50. Through research and specialized medical care at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA we learned that she was exhibiting signs of premature aging and Alzheimers. We didn’t know then that people with Down Syndrome have a strong genetic predisposition to develop early Alzheimers. Nancy passed away at the age of 52 in a nursing home surrounded by family.

The family sibling group was also present to assist our next youngest sister Ellen, one of the “little girls”, as she lived and died with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS. Her husband and daughters immediately became devoted home caregivers in a most loving and committed manner. She passed away at age 56 at our family home.
